Europe urged to confront euthanasia taboo: A Swiss parliamentarian has called on European governments to decriminalise assisted suicide and other forms of euthanasia.

Dick Marty presented his controversial report on euthanasia to the Council of Europe on Tuesday in the face of strong opposition from some countries.

Unveiling the text in Strasbourg, Marty appealed for the eventual decriminalisation of both active and passive euthanasia in Europe - under clearly defined conditions.

Only two European countries, the Netherlands and Belgium, have already taken this step.

Without switching this over to a religious debate, I think a lot of the reluctance to allow euthanasia comes from Europe's Christian background and attached taboos around suicide and murder.

Still, I'd be interested to know what the conditions uder which euthanasia is permissable are - does anyone know a link for these?

Q: Ignoring post-life based faith "reasoning" for just a moment, are there any valid logical or arguments against euthanasia? IS there evidence to support these arguments? Does it pose a risk of people being "volunteered" for euthanasia by manipulative lawyers, kin and governments?

Are people subtly encouraged by media to be as repelled by it as they are by, say, necrophagia? One of the non-religious arguements I heard for legislature that continues to stigmantize that was that people would more inclined to cannibalize each other, if necrophages weren't loathed.

      note-
Necrophage: One who eats the flesh of dead humans. Colloquially ascribed to those who *did not kill* said humans.

Cannibal: One who kills humans and then eats the flesh of those they kill.

In Holland it is as normal as making an appointment. And I am for it. Religion does not really come into play...
It has more to do with the Pharmaceutical Corporations that want to make a profit, they do not like this ideal of assisted suicide.
